Franklin Lewis: the 9th most active curriculum website manager
Instead of surveying the 10 most popular sites we have decided to provide you with some background information on the ten most active Curriculum website managers for 2008 based on their number of logins.
Here we talk to Franklin Lewis, manager of the FET Music website, that received 12 798 hits during this period.
You have dedicated many hours to managing your website. Why?
Music teachers and learners want up-to-date information about the new curriculum for Music. They read and listen with critical eyes and ears.
The subject has made a major shift for both teacher and learner. For the first time the curriculum accommodates both serious classical music and light popular music. Therefore, it is important that learners and teachers as well as supporting parents know exactly what content has to be covered and what musical and creative skills learners have to display in order to be successful.
What are your plans for your website in the coming 12 months?
To guide teachers and learners through the wealth of resources for the subject that is available on the Web.
To provide teachers and learners with an opportunity to showcase their classroom practices and successes regarding the new curriculum.
To engage music educators in a debate about the art and science of Music and its role in the curriculum and how we can effectively prepare learners for tertiary education and the vibrant music industry.
What are you currently reading?
Ronald Roberts’ Fit to Govern – The Native Intelligence of Thabo Mbeki.
What was your favourite film the past 12 months?
I do not have much time for movies, but lately I attended the premiere of My best friend’s girl: a non-violent film, full of humanity and humour.
People of your calibre are often driven, highly creative and/or have some secret formula for their success. What drives you and ,if you have a formula or just some home-spun advice, please would you share it with us?
When you are stressed, close your eyes, open your ears and mind to that voice or issue or situation and switch off for a while before you react. Listen to what other people are saying about their feelings and what their needs are. Discover and enjoy the hidden creativity of those around you. Put them to the test; challenge them; allow for healthy academic debate at all times; let them detest the second best; let them believe in themselves; promote non-discrimination; set high standards in performance despite circumstances. It is my reward when I can see the success and creativity of ordinary people around me.
Other than managing your website, what else do you do for fun?
Listen to good choral music, healthy conversations about politics, education and human relations and if I have more time I will return for a round of golf with a sun downer at the nineteenth hole.
