Alistair Mather: the 10th most active curriculum website manager
Instead of surveying the 10 most popular sites we have decided to provide you with some background information on the ten most active Curriculum website managers for 2008 based on their logins.
Here we talk to Alistair Mather, manager of the GET Technology website, that received 14 265 hits during this period.
You have dedicated many hours to managing your website. Why?
I feel guilty when you say that I have spent many hours managing the Technology WEB site. The reality is that at present Technology is not represented at Head Office as the post has been vacant for some time. There was a lot of outdated information on the site that related to C2005 that differs from the NCS (National Curriculum Statement) and I offered to start updating it. The fact that so many people accessed the site is evidence of the great need that teachers have for examples of good practice.
What are your plans for your website in the coming 12 months?
At present my position within the district office has changed and this has perforce reduced my time spent managing the Web site. With the new appointments in the Provincial Education Department I am hoping that the Technology website can become a valuable resource for all technology teachers by providing teaching, learning and assessments examples as practiced by lead teachers in technology.
What are you currently reading?
Nothing at the moment! The most recent book though was: The Integrated person. How curriculum development relates to new competencies, edited by Jos Letschert and published by CIDREE.
What was your favourite film the past 12 months?
I do not generally do films! Time would be spent watching DVDs at home with our two boys.
People of your calibre are often driven, highly creative and/or have some secret formula for their success. What drives you and, if you have a formula or just some home-spun advice, please would you share it with us?
I am driven by the need to share my experiences so that others can benefit. I find fulfilment in giving to others and am rewarded when it is taken, adapted and used within other teaching, learning and assessment experiences.
Other than managing your website, what else do you do for fun?
I find a lot of what I do within my day-to-day job fun. Often the days and nights are not long enough to do what I want to do. This needs to be balanced with my family life. For fun, I take the family to Knysna when the opportunity is there.
