The Nkosi Albert Luthuli Young Historians’ Competition is part of the
National Department’s ongoing commitment to encourage all learners to develop an
understanding, not only of the broad history of South Africa, but also of the
richness of the histories of their local communities. There are heroes and
heroines in all communities – people whose stories help us to understand the
past in a more meaningful way, and whose stories teach us about courage, dignity
and standing up for what it right. Many of the stories that you as young
historians will have heard also help us to understand how so many ordinary South
Africans struggled for human rights and democracy in South Africa, and the
responsibility we all have to ensure that our fragile democracy becomes
strong.
The Provincial Nkosi Albert Luthuli Young Historian’ Awards ceremony was held
at the Peninsula All-Suite Hotel on the 19 November to announce the names of the
10 learners and 2 teachers to represent the Western Cape Education Department at
the national event. From 1st to 3rd October, 86 learners and 23 teachers from
all over the country participated in the national Albert Luthuli Young
Historians’ Competition.
The WCED (Western Cape Education Department) is proud to announce that Yumna
Jackson of Bridgetown High School in Athlone (Central Education District) won
the first prize in the competition for learners. Mr Louis Marais from Wolseley
Secondary School (Cape Winelands Education District) was awarded the third prize
in the competition for teachers.
Well done to Yumna Jackson and Mr Marais. This is a commendable achievement
and we would like to extend our sincere gratitude for the dedicated staff at the
schools and the curriculum advisers who have assisted them in mining their
past.
